4.19.17 YWPA.BrileyOn April 19, 2017, the Zonta Club of Burlington presented its 2017 Young Women in Public Affairs winner, Beverly Briley, with a check for $250. Beverly, a senior at Essex High School in Vermont, will be attending Smith College in the fall. She plans on pursuing a career in both medicine and politics. 10.30.16 BarbGay90thBarbara Gay, of the Zonta Club of Burlington, Vermont, was honored on October 30 at a surprise 90th birthday party held at the Bishop Booth Conference Center in Burlington. Before her retirement, Barbara worked as a librarian at the University of Vermont. She has been a member of Zonta since 1984. Barbara's many family members, friends, and Zonta Club members enjoyed helping her celebrate! The Zonta Club of Burlington held their 20th Annual Celebrity Spelling Bee on May 19th, to benefit the Champlain College Single Parents Program, and on August 24th, they presented Champlain with a check in the amount of $5,100. The Zonta Club has raised well over $110,000 for the program over the last 20 years.

 In the Celebrity Spelling Bee, teams of 3 spellers from corporate sponsors compete to out-spell other corporate teams. Each sponsor team donated $325 to help provide struggling single parent students with a Champlain College education. This education helps them compete successfully in today’s job market, improving the quality of their lives and the lives of their children.

This year, sponsors of the Bee included: Coldwell Banker Hickok & Boardman Realty; Champlain College; Dr. Laura Ramirez Chiropractic; Freeman French Freeman – Architects; Friends of Literacy; Gravel and Shea PC; Grippin, Donlan & Pinkham, PLC; Wick & Maddocks Law Offices; Otter Creek Awnings, Sunrooms & Closets; Redstone Research, LLC; and Strategic Wealth Coach, LLC.

About the Champlain College Single Parents Program: Since 1987 Champlain College has offered a supportive atmosphere for single parents. The Single Parents Program provides exceptional advocacy and support to its participants by offering workshops, access to resources and many services designed to help students reach their educational and professional goals. Champlain recently increased the Single Parents Scholarship with the intent to meet full tuition for single parents who are financially eligible, full-time, undergraduate students from Vermont. Over 600 Single Parent Scholars have earned their degree from Champlain since the program’s inception.

The Zonta Club of Burlington participated in the city of Burlington, Vermont’s third annual International Women’s Day celebration. This is the second year in a row that Zonta members have participated on the organizing committee, putting on the event and being present with a Zonta information table. This is our biggest Advocacy event each year. Burlington Club members prepared the event program and PowerPointpresentation that played continuously during the event. Copies are attached along with the poster used around town to promote the event.
