Instructions for Creating/Updating Your Club's Web Page

Instructions - Option 3

For experienced web page authors!

If you already know how to create web pages, you are welcome to create a set of pages for your Club of your own design for posting on the District 1 web site. It can be as simple or complex as you wish, but should follow the guidelines of Zonta International, which you can find at www.zonta.org. Check in the Member Resource Center for material for the Public Relations and Communications Committee. (The Club Template follows these guidelines.)

The advantage of this approach is that you have full control over the format and content. NOTE: If you have created a web site for your Club and don't wish to have it included under the District main page, please send the URL to the District 1 Webmaster and to the ZI Webmaster, to include in the links from the District and the ZI web sites. If you have a web site under your own control, you won't have to rely on me to publish the pages.

If you chose to create your own pages for posting on the District web site, please note the following:

  1. The main file should be named "index.html".
  2. Your file names should be all lowercase, and should have no spaces. Use underscores ("_") or dashes ("-") as spacers if you don't want to run words together.
  3. Please do NOT use Microsoft Word or Publisher to create your page(s) -- Microsoft's conversion of text to HTML is fraught with problems!
  4. If you use a plain text editor, such as Notepad, to enter HTML directly, please use lots of white space, and carriage returns at ends of lines. Remember that carriage returns are just white space to browsers, and don't affect the formatting. Some e-mail systems break long lines with extraneous characters that I then have to remove. Some of these do very strange things to your pages.
  5. Please use relative references for other pages and graphics that are or will be on the District Web Site. For example, if you build a page called "annual-fundraiser.html", I will put it in your Club's sub folder, and the link from index.html should simply be <href="annual-fundraiser.html">; likewise the link back to your main page should be <href="index.html">.
  6. If you include graphics, use the GIF file types. If they are particular to your Club, they will be included in your Club's sub folder. There are a number of GIF's already stored in an "images" folder on the district web site. The ZI logo, zonta-logo.gif, is stored there. The reference to the logo in your document should be to <img src="../images/zonta-logo.gif">.

Please send the HTML and GIF files to Webmaster@zontadistrict1.org as attachments to an e-mail message. They will be posted as time permits.
