What is Zonta?

Zonta International is a worldwide organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women.

What does Our Local Club Do?

The Zonta Club of Quinebaug Valley, Charter 1140, chartered February 01, 1986, is a member of Zonta International District 1 Area 2. Our diverse membership consists of professionals in Accounting, Real Estate, Media, Information Systems, Management, Marketing and more. Our Club's territory encompasses over 100 square miles. We have regular monthly meetings, and meet more often for special service projects.

What are some of the Zonta Club of Quinebaug Valley's local service projects?

Annual Harriett Macht Scholarship in honor of the Club's founder. This scholarship is awarded to a local woman who is actively pursuing a return to the workforce. This scholarship is unique in that it is intended to be used for any expense that will assist the recipient in her goal of improving her position, her status. The scholarship may be used towards tuition payments, transportation costs, to purchase a business suit, etc.

Our club has produced a cookbook featuring favorite recipes of club members and various leaders in the community which is available upon request and at all our fundraising events.

This year we are once again fielding a team of walkers for The Relay for Life for breast cancer research. Click this link to donate to our team's walk!

As we make them, we donate blankets to Project Linus.

One of our most energetic projects, a benefit performance of Edward Albee's 1996 Pulitzer Prize winning play "Three Tall Women" was the Club's major fundraiser for the year. Proceeds went to local families, The Relay For Life and to Zonta International.

What are some of the Zonta International service projects?

Zonta International supports and administrates several different international service projects and/programs. Each biennium Zonta International sponsors international programs in association with agencies of the United Nations that work to advance the status of women. Most of the programs are in developing nations and are selected by the Zonta International Board and approved by the Zonta International membership. Zonta International also administers several international scholarship programs including: the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program which provides post-graduate fellowships to women in the fields of aeronautics and aeronautical engineering; the Jane M. Klausman Scholarship Program which provides college scholarships to women in business; and the Young Women in Public Affairs which offers recognition and scholarships on the district and international level for outstanding young women who are making a difference in their world through service.

In addition many Zonta clubs sponsor Z and Golden Z Club Programs that provide mentoring and support for young high school and college aged women. Additional information regarding these and other Zonta International Programs can be found on the Zonta International website at www.zonta.org.

When and where does the Quinebaug Valley club meet?

We meet on the third Monday of every month at 6:30 PM for a dinner meeting at J D Coopers Restaurant, 146 Park Road, Putnam, Connecticut. Directions: I-395, Exit 95, Kennedy Drive. Turn left at end of exit ramp onto Kennedy Drive. Kennedy Drive turns into Park Road. Restaurant is approximately 1/2 mile from I-395 on the left.

Am I eligible for Zonta membership?

Membership is Zonta International is by club invitation to individuals working in a decision-making capacity at least 50% of a normal workweek.

How much time does Zonta membership take?

Zonta clubs are service clubs and each club votes on local service projects and fundraising activities. Zonta members are asked to attend monthly club and committee meetings, and to participate in club projects. In addition opportunities exist to attend one-day annual workshops, two-day annual district conferences and a week-long biennial international convention. The Zonta International Convention, which generally lasts about 3 or 4 days, will be in Rotterdam in June 2008, and will be in San Antonio, TX in 2010.

The regular monthly meetings for our club are generally 2-1/2 hours in length (including meal).
